Atheist city Counselor being called for removal because of NC State Constitution

Article 6
Sec. 8. Disqualifications of office. The following persons shall be disqualified for office:
First, any person who shall deny the being of Almighty God.

This is clearly unconstitutional and violation of freedom of religion

Freedom and religion do not mix. One will destroy the other.

Sadly, in America, religion is winning.

It’s not unconstitutional according to their constitution.

If you’re referring to the United States Constitution it says "Congress shall pass no law" not "North Carolina shall pass no law."

Now that this clause has come to light – I am sure it will be removed from the state constitution.

Thank Odin I live in New York. Leave it to Christians to attack the constitution then blame others for doing it

The scene of the book is laid in Britain in order to emphasize that the English-speaking races are not innately better than anyone else, and that totalitarianism, if not fought against, could triumph anywhere." -George Orwell (Writer of 1984 and Animal Farm)

  7. Goat Says:

You’re right. It’s a total violation of freedom of religious ideals. The Supreme Court should make North Carolina amend their Constitution to remove that.

The article makes clear that the law, although still in the state constitution, is unenforceable. The problem for this guy may be that he’ll be forced to take part in drawn-out and expensive court battles if his enemies decide to put him through it.
