Britain had the largest force of ex-slaves who were granted freedom in the Caribbean, Canada, Nova Scotia and Sierra Leone after the conflict. Rhode Island and Massachusetts both raised all-black units, many of these, however, were free men not slaves, South Carolina, when offered $1,000 for able bodied slaves to join the fight, threatened to withdraw from the war. French units from Haiti of freed slaves also fought.

Rhode Island is well known for having a black regiment ( under white officers) during the late part of the Revoltion.
