The yachtsmen released by the state of Iran had their freedom secured?

None of the above.
It was nothing to do with the diplomatic service; the Consular Office was dealing with it and this is not the same thing.
They had also been arrested by members of the Republican Guard, and their release would have been partly down to the Iranian government telling them to stop behaving like idiots and let them go. The Iranian Government and the Republican Guard are not particularly friendly and tolerate each other more than work with each other and any effort which the government could make to exert pressure on them would have been taken. Especially since there was extremely limited grounds for arresting them in the first place. How much threat does a crippled yacht crewed by five civilians really inflict on Iranian sovereignty?
I do not believe a solitary penny of taxpayers money has been sent in that direction and as the Republican Guard is not a terrorist group I find it highly unlikely that terrorist negotiators got involved either.
The only one I might give some credence to is unintended hilarity; but not on the part of anyone British, rather firmly caused by Iran implying that these five yachties might be spies. That, in absolute fact, is laughable.
