Why do religious people jump up and down about their freedom of speech?

Posted on January 17th, 2010 by admin

I recently posted a question about the appropriateness of religious types offering the Bible as practical advise for people esp the young with mental health issues. And all the religious types jumped up and down about their freedom of speech. I respect freedom of speech. But these people couldn’t see the issue of whether or not they’re response by using the Bible was appropriate. Yes you have the right to freedom of speech. But what about all the people whose rights you don’t respect. Gay and lesbian rights for example. Do they have freedom of speech too?????

If they didn’t try to censure everyone who disagreed with them, their freedom of speech would seem less like bullying.

There is a right to free speech, but most people aren’t qualified to use it.

People go blabbing about their rights as if that is all that is important and don’t ever care that greater rights demand greater responsibility.

Religion preys on the mentally or physically weak which is why they tell people in the mental health section to read the bible.

Everyone should jump up and down about their freedom of speech! I don’t know what the gay marriage thing has to do with free speech but no one has the right to restrict those rights or any others unless they directly harm someone. Moral offense does not count as harm.

Edit- To everyone saying you don’t have the right to commit immoral acts that is so far from the truth! I have the right to go have premarital sex galore and you have the right to teach your children things that I personally believe are immoral. The beautiful thing about living in a free country is that you have the right to piss people off and to live with those consequences.

Well you have to understand the idealism of Christianity. They believe that the bible has every answer for every question. That is their belief and how most walk their life. So for ex. if I went to my grandmother about perhaps a bully at school or something like that, she would be highly likely to tell a bible story or make some reference to something jesus said or something along those lines. Hope this helps? Also, they don’t think they are disrespecting gay or lesbian rights because they don’t believe they have any in certain instances such as gay marriage.

    Your question was inappropriate.

Why does any AMERICAN value their freedom of speech?

And why would you deny that to anyone?

Both groups exercises their freedom of speech, but their is a fine line between freedom of speech, and verbal harassment, the second being illegal. I think Christians have crossed the line a lot, but then they always defend themselves by saying its free speech.

As an atheist, I wouldn’t even shut down Fred Phelps and his disgusting message. That is the price we pay when we accept the right to free speech. What a lot of religious folks don’t like is dissenting speech- anything that contradicts their dogma. Look at the wars between Catholics and Protestants, or the religious persecution of non-believers. The only reason why religious people tend to tolerate freedom of speech now is that it is a fundamental Western cultural value which they have learned from infancy. After all, it certainly wasn’t created by the church!
