I am writing a paper and need a good serious quote about freedom.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I had one of those little magnetic car ribbons that said, "Land of the free because of the brave." I loved it, but someone with no morals whatsoever stole it off of my Jeep.

The first thing that popped into my head when I read your question was, "Give me liberty or give me death."
I looked up that quote and chose this site:
http://libertyonline.hypermall.com/henry-liberty.html
It’s a speech made by Patrick Henry on March 23, 1775. The last seven words in this speech are "give me liberty or give me death!"
I took the time to read the entire speech — very rousing… Sounds like what you are looking for, based on your question indicating "good serious quote about freedom."

Jean-Jacques Rousseaus ‘Social Contract’ says ‘Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains’.
Personally, I prefer ‘Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose’ in Janis Joplins ‘Me & Bobby McGee’
Just remebered Shakespeares ‘Cry freedom, and let slip the dogs of war’

Freedom is not a gift nor does it simply exist for us to have, but rather it is a sacred duty, and its blessed yield of hope is born from none other than the blood of the innocent.
