   There is a price to be paid in order to have a free society. Taxes are paid, wars are fought, lives are lost.
   So, you may have to pay with your life so that you family can be free….

   I’m not sure myself, but it’s always used in the context of war. That is, we have to fight wars and attack other people so that we can remain free. I don’t buy it.

   It means that we have had to fight for our freedom for the last 230 years. it hasn’t come free. Many lives have been lost fighting for the freedoms we have in the US, today.
