Would you risk your freedom and life to protect others of a foreign nation when you have strict orders not to?

i just watched "beyond the gates". a UN commander is ordered to not engage the enemy unless fired upon first. he and his men stand by and watch the murders of hundreds of thousands of civilians take place.
Would you order your men to engage them and protect civilians?
if my guys were in it with me you bet. i would turn that place into a war zone.

That’s an interesting question. Usually, an individual commander knows much less about what is going on than the higher-ups. There could be any number of reasons why they were told not to engage unless fired on, and trying to save those civilians’ lives may actually result in thousands of other, preventable deaths.
Furthermore, what are the chances that those few men would be able to neutralize their enemy without being killed themselves? In that case, they are dead, and the civilians are still being slaughtered.
