According to the story, the students disrupted the speech the University of Irvine had asked the Israeli ambassador, Michael Oren, to make. While we’ve all seen speakers shouted down were exceptions made due to ethnicity. If the disruptor’s would have been, Irish for example, would they have been charged?
The real question should be: Does my right to freedom of speech allow me to take that same right away from another?

Your freedom of speech has limits , like no yelling fire in a theatre. If somebody heckles the president during one of his speeches , they will be removed , no matter what ethnicity they are .There is a limit to all speech especially hate speech.. that is against the law.
I’ve been having a debate with my friend over this topic, and I was wondering if someone could shed some light on it from a legal perspective.
For example, if you are an online blogger and you post a critical, negative view of a company or brand, is this considered defamation of the company’s character? What if someone writes a blog post about, say, an ex? Where is the line drawn between freedom of speech and defamation of character?
There are several lines. The major one between blogging about a corporation and about an ex is that only one is a "public figure". There is a much greater threshold for public criticism if the entity can count as a public figure, meaning they kind of put themselves in the spotlight. Another line is whether you represent your statements as fact or opinion. An opinion is less likely to be considered defamatory. Also, if it was meant as a joke, then this also goes against being defamatory. Also, if the statements are true then it can’t be defamation.
And to correct one of the other answers, blogging would be considered libel, not slander.
I really would like some examples of why freedom of speech should be a guaranteed right to all Americans. Some news articles or rallies in which protesters and what not win for their cause for the greater good of the country.
Without freedom of speech it could have been impossible for Jim crowe laws to be repealed as many southern states likely would have outlawed complaining or talking about the inequalities of it.
Also see places like north Korea, where one can be killed for simply not liking something the government did or is doing.
My school principle told two kids they had to take down a Facebook page called "You know you go to Jeff High if…" and students would put funny endings on like "you take Mexican instead of Spanish". Do the kids have the right to keep it up as Freedom of Speech since it doesn’t impede on the learning environment of the school or does the principle have authority?
If this is a public school, the principal is completely wrong…if it is a private school, the principal can do whatever he wants…
In the end, however, this is a fight you’re not going to have the resources to fight…you’re better off just making the facebook page private…

Basically, my sister wrote a letter of complaint to someone who shall remain nameless, and the said person, after reading the word disagree, ripped it up in front of her, and said she was a "very rude person". Is this against my sisters freedom of speech, and if so, what are the punishments (eg: a fine)?
The said person specifically said to write a letter to her if you disagreed. She also said my sister and her friends who wrote the letter are forbidden to give her anymore letters.
She didn’t actually read it apart from the word disagree.
All of us have the right to disagree and although the person your sister wrote to may have torn the letter up in her face that person cannot stop your sister sending another letter or even order you not to that is your sisters choice. If this is a teacher or a work supervisor, write again and send a copy to your headmaster or manager above your supervisor. At the bottom of the letter make it clear you have sent this letter to a person higher up the chain. Try to resolve the matter through dialogue.
Talking things through whether at school or in the work place is always the best way to resolve disputes.

Exercising one’s rights does not mean we are allowed to infringe on someone else’s. That’s what these idiots did.

yes they do believe john had right to say what he can say. but they also have right to say what want to say to. yes it does mean childish screaming matches.

I think that means that one can speak out against the government without fear of reprisals. It does not mean that one may say, or do, disgusting and vulgar things just for the sake of doing them..
I am arguing that in the Tinker vs. Des Moines case that Des Moines had the right to prevent students from protesting the Viatnam War. I have to prove that in the First Amendment where it says all people have freedom speech, schools can put limits on whast their students say and do.

I despair every time I hear about censorship due to a group being "offended" by something as trivial as a nursery rhyme, or a drawing. Sure, if its genuinely offensive, deliberately racist or slanderous then by all means, feel free to complain. But it’s almost as if the fact they are offended gives them superior rights, which we have to bow to.
My question is: Do you believe that religion can have an overall negative effect on society through censorship, intimidation- and inhibiting freedom of speech?
