How is freedom defined in your life as you live it as opposed to the thought of freedom within your mind ?

Posted on June 14th, 2010 by admin

Have you reconciled the two? So that your life is an outward expression of that which you think, and know , or are you constrained by lack of ability, knowledge or circumstances…?

When you say the thought of freedom in our minds, I think of the huge array of thoughts flittering by our minds every minute, and we’re not often free to choose what enters our mind. In that way we’re not free if we can’t control the incoming input. Freedom in life comes from the thoughts that guide our choices.

Yeah. Swimming and martial arts really make you feel free to do anything.

Could you be happy if all you had were friends, freedom and an analysed life?

Posted on March 20th, 2010 by admin

According to the philosopher Epicurus, that’s all that anyone needs to be happy. Would you agree?

…no, Epicurus doesn’t live in the 21st century, "show me the money" and i’ll be happier…

why do you value your life/freedom/free will?

Posted on March 11th, 2010 by admin

Why do you value your life?
Why do you value your freedom?
Why do you value your free will?
i need some reasons that i can turn into a 10 minute presentation, i have a couple already but the only other reason i can think of is "just because"

I value life because its a hell of a lot better than death. Plus living is the only time you feel.
Freedom is important because without it you don’t have control of yourself. Also without freedom, everyone would be sick of life and everyone would be the same. Free will is important because it allows you to make your own choices and it is the best teacher in the world. If you are just told that something is a bad choice then you won’t ever learn for yourself.

What is a this American Life episode dealing with choice, mental captivity vs. freedom or oppression of women?

Posted on February 22nd, 2010 by admin

Its for a presentation and i want to play a clip but cant find a good episode to use. teh presentation is on the book woman at point zero by nawal el saadawi.

Just what sort of episode of "This American Life" do you think will resonate with the tale of an Egyptian prostitute on death row for murder? Or do you simply wish to borrow the credibility of the radio series for your presentation on an unrelated topic?

I live in Iran and I dislike government(no freedom no good life) . What can I do?

Posted on February 20th, 2010 by admin

If you are brave enough . . . . . organize and resist.

If that is not possible, (and no one would blame you if you said it was not) then get the HELL out . . . . .

If enough of the smart, forward-looking young people leave, Iran may wake up to see they have only old men, and those too weak or stupid to leave living there.

Iran is a great nation with a rich, full history. Germany had a bad leader, but got past that "mistake" and is now a wonderful democracy. Iran can get past these bad years. Once there is democracy there, you will restore your nation’s greatness.

When do you worry? Have you ever expd the freedom from worry that comes when you put your life in God’s hands?

Posted on February 18th, 2010 by admin

"That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?" [Matthew 6:25]

I’m too smart for that kind of stuff. I control my own life and my own destiny.

im having debate about children shouldn’t be given freedom in managing their life?

Posted on February 16th, 2010 by admin

why do you think that is so? children shouldn’t be given freedom in managing their life.

It’s all about guidance.

Children are too young to make responsible decisions. It’s the responsibility to help them with this.

How does Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of Freedom have affected your outlook in life?

Posted on February 15th, 2010 by admin

Sorry I haven’t read much of his stuff, so I am not aware of any influence.

"I do not perceive a certain signal in my mind and then decide to act on it, or if I do, it is a rare and derivative occurrence."

My understanding is that he thought there was no mind body duaility, thus no separate mind telling the body what to do.

He also seemed to think that we just did things, often without forethought.

This type of stance goes against the research in Cognition that I am familiar with. machines that monitor our brain states before we make a decision (or have a thought such as finding an answer to a problem) are able to predict our choices before we know what we were about decide.

Maybe you could tell me a little more what his ideas were, if you think his ideas might affect my life.
