A key concept in American literature is personal freedom. Select one piece of literature from the course which dealt with the idea of personal freedom. In your response, include the name of the work of literature, the type of literature (novel, play, story or poem), and at least two specific ways in which the concept of personal freedom is evident in that literary work.

Common Sense- Thomas Payne

American Literature is fairly broad in its scope–while one might at first be led to the earlier writings of America, there are also novels such as The Awakening by Kate Chopin in which the concept of personal freedom is evident if not specifically addressed. The protagonist Edna Pontellier is held against social standards for women in her time. In her development through the novel she begins to express her personal freedom and independence: "I don’t want anything but my own way. That is wanting a good deal, of course, when you have to trample upon the lives, the hearts, the prejudices of others – but no matter." Outside of her marriage bonds she explores her sexual independence and attends races and parties at her own will rather than according to public convention. She realizes that she can function in capacities other than wife or mother.

It’s been a while since I’ve read the book, so if these ideas are for any purpose other than discussion here they need some more complete support…
